Ms Haylene Grogan is a very proud Yalanji and Tagalaka woman with Italian heritage. Haylene has extensive public sector experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy development, having held executive positions in the Queensland, New South Wales (NSW) and Commonwealth Governments. Haylene commenced her career in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health sector at Wuchopperen Aboriginal Medical Service Centre in Cairns in 1982 as Receptionist and then as an Aboriginal Health Worker. She pursued a nursing career as a registered nurse and midwife. Haylene returned to Queensland Health in late 2019, where she has previously held the position of Senior Director of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Branch (over 10 years ago). Prior to her returning to Queensland Health, she was the Director of Policy and Reform at NSW Aboriginal Affairs, where she led the development of an Aboriginal Economic Prosperity Framework and guided NSW to becoming the first jurisdiction in Australia to enact Aboriginal languages legislation, with the introduction of the Aboriginal Languages Act 2017 into NSW Parliament in October of that year. Haylene re-joined Queensland Health after almost 10 years outside of “health” and is very excited to be leading an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health equity reform agenda within the health sector, particularly with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health sector in Queensland.
